I wasn't sure I was going to finish reading this book but it did get better about half way through. It has some really humorous scenes and it was interesting to catch up on the characters from the previous three books. I'm looking forward to Jackson's story in 2010.
I'm going to go against the grain and say I liked this book better than the other books in the Promises series. They were obnoxious, arrogant, and extremely insufferable in my opinion, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. The reason I liked this book better than all the others is because I liked Evie more than I liked any character male or female from any Promises book. A couple of things that I didn't like about the book was the Neanderthal behavior of the other male characters Asa, Clint, and Cougar. I guess the author equates being egomaniacal with being sexy. The other thing I didn't like was that all brad had to do was kiss Evie or have sex with her and she forgets all of her convictions.
This was my first book by this writer and I guess I should have looked at the reviews before I started reading it. I just wanted them to get it over with already. The whole wedding intro was too combative. I could not get with the authors writing style. After that wedding night scene I just put the book down. Sometimes I had to wonder who was saying what. As another poster stated, there are a lot of characters from other books in this stories which was confusing. Come to think about it.
But what really made me put his book down was the near 30 page wedding night scene. It was too talky, to psycho analytical on the part of the hero and altogether too combative. Like the authoer was trying to show how ruthless all of the past H/H were. I will try getting some of her earlier works and see how I like them but this one left me board.
To top off that she has a smooth and eye-catching style of writing, oh, and HOT too. I love Sarah McCarty. I can't find many authors that are writing in the western historical genre at the moment. Her books are erotica (with an actual story). at it's best.
But now that I know how much more erotic & fulfilling her books can be I just found myself a bit let down & disappointed. Publishers like Ellora's Cave just give authors the freedom to be very erotically explicit.
Sarah's books really have lost a lot of their steam if this book is one to judge by. I wanted to give this book 5 stars but I just can't.
Unfortunately I think that if Berkley stays the publisher the books & writing style that I have come to love will be a thing of the past. I am totally disappointed by the loss of the hot love scenes that are quite honestly the reason that I keep coming back to Sarah McCarty's books.
After the first book of hers that I read I went & got every one of her books that I could get my hands on. If I had never read any of SM's books before, than Promises Reveal would have sat with me just fine.
My issues with the love scenes in this book aside I still think that Sarah McCarty is a wonderful author.
